YLL Farm League Baseball Rules
All games are played under the Official Little League International Regulations, Playing Rules, and Operating Policies (the “Little League Rulebook”). For the latest edition of the Little League rules, please download the official Little League Rulebook App or visit the Little League Rules and Regulations page. Coaches, parents, and players should review the official rules for any situation not covered below.
Below are the local rules for the Yarmouth Little League’s Farm League Division.
Infield Fly & Dropped Third Strike
- The infield fly rule is not invoked in Farm.
- There is no dropped third strike rule.
Stealing
- There is no stealing allowed in Farm League.
Advancing Runners
- Runners may not advance on overthrows.
- Once the ball is back in the infield and under the control of the defensive team, no further advancement is allowed and the play is over.
9-Batter Rule
- Each half-inning ends after three outs or nine batters, whichever comes first.
- The nine-batter rule is not enforced in the last inning for either team.
Pitching Rules
- The season begins with coach-pitch. Coaches are not permitted to strike out batters.
- The division will gradually transition to player-pitch as the season progresses.
- When players are pitching:
- Pitcher’s must pitch within a clear boundary, no closer than the front edge of the mound, and if possible from the rubber.
- Batters may be struck out.
- Each pitcher is limited to a maximum of 5 pitches per batter.
- A coach will stand nearby and is encouraged to step in to pitch if the player-pitcher is having difficulty throwing strikes.
Player Positions, Playing Time & Opportunities
- Coaches will ensure outfielders remain in the outfield and don’t become secondary infielders
- Players should be given opportunities to try all positions, as long as it does not create a legitimate safety risk (particularly at catcher or first base).
Game Timing & Length
- Games last 6 innings or 1.5 hours (90 minutes), whichever comes first. The current inning must be completed.
Field Responsibilities
- The home team is responsible for preparing the field before the game (e.g., drawing the baselines and batter’s box).
- The away team is responsible for raking and cleaning up the field after the game.
These simplified rules are designed to emphasize fun, skill development, and safety for our youngest players.
